The term ‘computer’ has become an integral part of our everyday vocabulary. From desktops and laptops to the smartphones in our pockets, computers are everywhere. But what makes a computer, a computer? The answer lies in its hardware. What is Computer Hardware?

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Motherboard

It’s a large rectangular board that holds the CPU, memory, connectors for the hard drive and optical drives, expansion cards to control the video and audio, and connections to your computer’s ports (USB ports, printer port, mouse and keyboard connections, etc.). Essentially, it’s the ‘body’ that everything else connects to.

Memory (RAM)

Random Access Memory (RAM) is the “working memory” of a computer. It temporarily stores the data that the CPU uses, which allows the CPU to process information quickly. The more RAM a computer has, the more data it can process simultaneously, enhancing its performance.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is where a computer permanently stores data. Unlike RAM, which clears whenever the computer is restarted, the hard drive retains the data. There are two types: Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), which are mechanical and have spinning disks, and Solid State Drives (SSDs), which are digital and faster.

Power Supply Unit (PSU)

The PSU is a component that supplies power to the computer. It converts the power from the outlet into usable power for the many parts inside the computer.

Input & Output Devices

These devices allow us to interact with our computers. Input devices, like the keyboard and mouse, allow us to input commands, while output devices, like the monitor and printer, output data in understandable forms (images, documents, etc.).

The Relationship Between Hardware and Software

Although hardware forms the physical part of a computer, it requires software (the intangible part) to function. The Operating System (OS), such as Windows or macOS, interfaces between the user and the hardware, allowing us to give commands. Application software, like web browsers or video games, utilizes the hardware to provide useful services to the user.
